How to Create an Independent Income Stream With Your Knowledge or Expertise
A Digital KnowledgePreneur is an individual who builds an independent income stream by packaging their personal knowledge, skills, or expertise into digital products, services, or experiences — and delivers them online.
They typically offer coaching, consulting, training, or specialized services through platforms like websites, courses, membership sites, webinars, newsletters, digital downloads, or online sessions.
The focus is on leveraging what they already know to create value for others, attract a viable audience, and generate income without needing a traditional employer or physical storefront.
But if you don't have the required systems, it will be impossible for you to become a Digital KnowledgePreneur.
"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."
— James Clear
I had designed, built and managed business systems for decades, yet I didn't invest the necessary thought and effort to solve this problem.
But then, on Monday, January 6, 2025, something unexpected happened.
I sat down at my desk that Monday morning ready to plan the new year with my morning pages routine, in which I practice a discipline called freewriting.
But the plan turned out very differently to my initial intentions, which often happens during freewriting.
When this happens, I embrace it.
This time, an idea popped into my head that I couldn't shake.
"What if I used my systems knowledge and expertise to help people set up systems to sell their knowledge and expertise?"
So I went about brainstorming a framework to do this.
Over the next few days, weeks, and months, my whiteboard was filled with drawings, Mind Maps, scribblings and sticky notes.
My journals, both physical and digital, were filled with notes.
And my favourite Mind Mapping tool had numerous Mind Maps on the topic.
Finally, I ended up with The M5 Roadmap For Digital KnowledgePreneurs, a comprehensive guide for those wanting to create an independent income stream with their knowledge and expertise.
But before we get to the Roadmap, there is an important issue that we need to address.
This question is often asked by both beginners and seasoned professionals.
If you are comfortable with helping people and have been doing it for years, then you can move on to the M5 Roadmap.
For the rest of us, we are going to solve this problem once and for all.
The solution is revealed in the unlikely story of Frank Abagnale Jr, a fraudster and con-artist.
He was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie, Catch me if you can, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the book of the same name.
Abagnale was a renowned fraudster who claims to have impersonated many professionals, even though he did not have the qualifications.
When questioned by the FBI on how he got away with being a college professor, he claimed that all he had to do was read one chapter ahead.
While many of his claims are being challenged (he is a fraudster after all), we can draw on the principle that all we need to do is choose someone who knows less than us.
Here is another unlikely example that drove the point home for me.
I attended a webinar where the presenter told us about his journey from knowing nothing, to becoming a search and rescue drone pilot.
I didn't even know it was a thing.
While he had only been involved with drones for a few months, he had spent hundreds of hours exploring what it took to go from knowing nothing about drones to owning and flying one.
Here are some of the things he learned:
Regulatory bodies, societies, clubs, academies and organisations involved in drone search and rescue.
Visual versus thermal cameras.
Operating temperatures and flying in wet or adverse conditions.
Night flying.
The need for multiple controllers.
How to set up and get into the air as quickly as possible.
How to prevent damage to the drone (a search and rescue drone can cost more than $30,000).
Insurance policies for drones.
How to become a certified pilot.
How to buy the right drone for your needs.
Common mistakes beginners make.
And more...
He learned how to go from knowing nothing to buying and flying a drone for search and rescue in a few months.
His knowledge and expertise can save a potential drone pilot hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars.
If I were interested in becoming a certified drone pilot, I would definitely listen to him, even though he only has a few months experience.
There is something you know that people are willing to pay for!
You just need to choose people who know less than you.
And you need a system.
But to set up your system, you need a framework.
I therefore spent months developing a framework to create an independent income stream with what you already know.
It's called the M5 Roadmap For Digital KnowledgePreneurs and will help you create your own framework to help people with your knowledge or expertise.
You can read more about it on the next page, if you are ready to begin your journey.

Why Listen to Me?
I've spent over three decades designing, building, and managing business systems in the corporate world.
Since 2014, I’ve been working remotely as a Digital KnowledgePreneur, helping people with my knowledge and expertise.
I’ve used digital platforms to share insights and help others without being tied to a physical location or a traditional business structure.
What I teach is based on experience—real-world lessons, not just theories.
You'll learn the same strategies I’ve used, plus others that are proven to work in the digital space.
However, let’s be clear:
What I offer is a proven pathway—business models that work, requiring minimal upfront investment but offering long-term potential.
I created this platform because I've always loved helping people with their systems.
Over time, I saw a clear opportunity to create a straightforward system that helps people generate an independent income stream from their existing knowledge and expertise.
While most existing systems jump straight into growth, scaling, or passive income, my approach starts by helping people one-on-one.
This ensures your foundations are strong, realistic, and sustainable before scaling up.

The term KnowledgePreneur blends two powerful concepts: knowledge and entrepreneurship.
Curious about its history, I asked my favorite AI tool to dig into its origins.
Here's what it found:
Colin Coulson-Thomas (2003): In his book The Knowledge Entrepreneur, Coulson-Thomas explores how businesses can create, manage, and profit from intellectual capital. Though he used the term "Knowledge Entrepreneur," his work laid the foundation for knowledge-based business models.
Stan Skrzeszewski (2005): In The Knowledge Entrepreneur, Skrzeszewski defines a KnowledgePreneur as someone skilled in leveraging intellectual assets to create new ventures, generate wealth, or improve services—particularly in fields like education and libraries.
Ant Hodges (2024): In The Knowledgepreneur® Podcast, Hodges shares practical strategies for marketing, growing, and scaling online businesses based on expertise. His work has helped popularize the modern KnowledgePreneur concept.
From its academic roots to today’s digital-first economy, the KnowledgePreneur movement has evolved into a powerful model for those who want to turn their knowledge into income.
And that’s exactly what this site is here to help you do—by guiding you through simple, effective digital business models.
